For the past 20 years I have been taking a brisk one mile walk every day.

It has begun to take a toll on my knees.

What would be a good bicycle to purchase that could simulate walking?

How far bicycling is the equivalent of a one mile walk? Are there any features on a bike that would
    could simulate walking?

You might also consider an elliptical machine. A decent elliptical is about the same price as a nice bike, it's a motion similar to walking, and of course there's zero impact on joints. The fact that the weather is always 70 degrees and dry (indoors, lol) is a big plus in my neck of the woods as well. :)

Thank you for the advice. EMs make me sea sick and prefer outdoors.

I am not sure how it compares to walking but I enjoy my hybrid bike. It's a cross between a road bike and mountain bike. It rides best on pavement, has a bit larger seat, and sits you in an upright position while you ride. If you have a local bike shop or Trek bicycle store near you, they may let you test drive different styles to help decide.

@JWBlue, sorry I missed this. Are you still in the market?

What's your budget? How far do you plan to ride? What type of surface? Asking "what bike?" is a bit like asking "what dog?" Options are huge and our tastes don't always mesh. And then there is budget. I've owned a lot of bikes over the years -- crit, touring, endurance, gravel, hardtail xc -- and have kicked a lot of tires, so happy to share my thoughts. Thankfully there is a lot of one-bike-does-many in the market now. PM if you'd prefer.
