I'm Going to Gamble in 50 Casinos in 24 Hours on Foot - Pre Trip Report

Apologies for the long post.

I've actually been a member here for years but cant figure out my old account.

Anyway, I'm a Vegas veteran, lost count of the number of trips. Somewhere between 35 and 40 I think. I'm a big fan of the YouTube vlogs especially when I have a trip coming up, to check out the new slots and get me in the mood. I noticed a lot of the Vloggers doing various 'Challenges'. For example they will gamble in Every casino on Fremont street, or every MGM casino etc. I didn't see many people attempting the whole strip. The ones I did find they were driving to each casino. So, last year I made a challenge up, $500 budget and see how far I can get gambling $40 per casino. I started at Mandalay Bay, did all the South Strip Casinos and then went up one side to The STRAT and then back down the other, finishing in Planet Hollywood. I actually completed the challenge with $120 left, gambling in 32 Casinos. Took just over 11 hours to finish.

I actually filmed this whole attempt and intended to put it on YouTube, however when I got home I realized that I am a moron and I filmed it in portrait rather than landscape, and it kind of killed my enthusiasm and I never ended up doing it. I still want to do it and film it, problem is, when I did film it I was on a solo trip, a quick stop off for a couple of nights on my way to a wedding in New York. I normally go to Vegas with my wife and there's no way she's going to do it, and its not fair for me to disappear for a whole day. So although I've still been thinking about and planning on doing a casino challenge, I wasn't sure when it would be possible.

Until now....

I got drunk a few weeks ago and booked a spontaneous 3 night trip to Vegas for a sporting event with a plan to attend a watch party with friends. My team promptly shit the bed and didn't make the final. Serves me right for being over confident. My flights are non-refundable, and my over from MGM Grand was surprisingly good! Offered me a suite, fully comped, no resort fees, despite me not retaining Gold Status last year. I almost cancelled.... but then I thought, this is an opportunity to re-do my Casino Challenge! And not screw up the bloody filming!!!!

I have decided against doing the $500 version, because even though I got lucky last time, its unlikely that I will complete the whole strip again. So I was thinking of ways to make it more interesting. I struggled to find videos of people doing the entire strip on foot.... I found ZERO videos of people doing the entire strip AND Fremont on foot. I counted up the casinos and then thought, what the hell, lets make it 50. (I actually have 52 casinos that I plan to gamble in but not sure if people will count 2 of them as casinos so I added 2 more just in case).

So yes. In a little over 2 weeks time I am going to attempt to gamble in 52 casinos in 24 hours on foot. I will film this attempt and also post trip report on here.

In the meantime I am looking for a bit of help and advice on my list which I will post below. Has anyone on here done this or similar before? If so any tips would be appreciated. Also, please look at my list and let me know if there are any errors or omissions.

I am starting on Fremont because I'd rather do the walk from Fremont to The Strat in the daytime, also if reports are to be believed, Aztec Inn may be better not to do after dark as well. Also with me staying at MGM it makes sense for it to be last on the list.

Damn @Dannyg ! My first reaction is “why would you ever want to do this?” But I’m old and lack the energy and desire to do this.

I’m rooting for you. I will gladly watch whatever you post to YouTube because it seems so extra.

 

haha I am a long distance walker/hiker. I used to play a lot of sports and then I blew my knee out... went through a ton of surgery so I could kick a ball again and then promptly slipped a disc in my back! So that was the end of that. I started walking as it helped both my knee and back and now its become 'my thing'. I see this no different than doing a long hike, except the scenery is Vegas and I will be very very drunk.

John and Kristina Mehaffey (Vegas Advantage) visited over 90 casinos, including Primm, around Vegas in less than 24 hours in October, so very doable. At one point they posted the times of the slot tickets they received from each place, but I can't find it.

About 18 months ago I walked from Circus Circus to Mandalay, then back up to Encore. Took roughly six hours, making observations of table minimums at each place.

 

Thank you! I did have Rio, Gold Coast and Palms on my first list but they were the biggest pain in the butt to get to. I was able to eliminate them when I found out about The Aztec Inn and Eureka (didn't know they existed), Stage Door and Virgin Hotel. For some reason I thought Virgin was MUCH further away than it actually is. Its still a bit of a trek but nowhere near as bad as the alternative. I only ever went there once when it was Hard Rock and that was 15 years ago.

I read the articles. They used a car for most of it. I will use no mode of transport other than walking.

They thought they beat the Guinness World Record of 74 (also using transport), but they didn't do their research very well. In order to break the record you have to wear a GoPro for the entire 24 hours and can only play table games not slots (bizarrely). Which means you have to go and get the chips ahead of time, and Guinness will not allow any casinos that don't have table games.

I'm not trying to break the world record, although I do wonder if anyone has ever done this many on foot before. Probably have is my guess.

Derek Stevens let them use the Circa limo for most if not all of them. I think what @Dannyg is going to (or at least try to) accomplish is much more impressive.

Best of luck to you. That's very ambitious and if you truly walk it (no motor vehicles), you are definitely one true hiker.

I think my personal casino best in 24 hours is somewhere around 20 casinos. 50+ is truly an ultra-marathon!

Glad you intelligently got all 12 downtown places first, because that's one closely-located cluster (by comparison purposes, anyway), and it'll rack up the easiest places first.

Not sure if you have considered or known about these, but there is bartop VP gambling at these places along the way:

- Peppermill Lounge (lounge area, separate from restaurant)-- this is located across the street from Resorts World
- Thunderbird Saloon - 1215 S. Las Vegas Blvd. - this is north of The Strat, near some wedding chapels and hostels
- Dino's Lounge - also north of The Strat

Perhaps they aren't truly casinos, but you'll be passing by them anyway.

Since you asked for my opinions, mine is that this sounds awful. I have no idea what enjoyment you could possible receive from attempting this, other than saying I did it. And really, what have you done? If you're going to do it, I would start at dawn and hope the hottest part of the afternoon coincides with being at connected casinos where you can remain indoors. I mean, if you truly intend only to walk, that means not only no cars, bus, or mono, but also no escalator or moving walkways! Its going to get tiresome and hot. Not mid July hot, but a ninety degree afternoon would not be a surprise. Plus, you're not going to have much time to spend in each place. Certainly not enough time to enjoy the resorts. Its just going to be a long hike with some very sparse gambling sprinkled in. Just being honest, but this sounds more like a stunt to drive eyeballs to a social media account. If that is your goal, maybe try a stunt that is less pointlessly grueling. Like, find and play 52 different movie themed slots in one afternoon. I am not a slot player, so I have no idea if that is the kind of video slot players would want to watch. But I'm sure your feet would prefer it!

But it sounds like you're perhaps not seeking opinions on whether its a good or fun idea. In which case, my only tip would be to make sure you have water at the key, longer parts of your hike. I have not, nor will I ever, walk between all of these points in one day. But through two decades, I have walked every stretch of road you are contemplating. Yeah, maybe Virgin isn;t as far as you were expecting, but some of these places will take longer to traverse than you are probably anticipating. Not just the distances, but also the intersections. Once you get off Strip, there are still some busy roads where you may be standing in the heat waiting for traffic lights to change. Just, be ready. You know downtown to the Strat is a bit of a haul. But Virgin to PHo is a solid mile in the heat and wind also. Good luck

 

Another place you could add that also has bartop VP along your trek is

- Club Platinum

which is located next door to Tuscany.

I read an article that it's one of only two places in all of Nevada that has a full gambling license plus alcohol plus topless dancing (the "trifecta"), so while not technically a casino, it does have bartop VP. Article below.

I've never been in there myself, 'cuz I've more or less sworn-off strip clubs personally, but just throwing it out there because it's also on the way.

Yeah, I would think if he starts downtown as early in the morning as possible, it would probably make the adventure a little more pleasant. And I agree that I'd also strike Virgin and probably Westgate off the list.

 

I admire your courage and sense of adventure. As far as the wisdom of doing it, I will leave that to you to decide after you attempt it.

I agree with @Travel Fanatic 100%. Sounds like an awful way to spend one day in Vegas. Especially when you are only there for three nights. Doesn't sound interesting at all.

What are you doing to prepare/train for it? It's very different than a more traditional hike. Different terrain. Different obstacles. Going from sunny and 90 degree plus (at least) outside to inside and air conditioning constantly.

And the "very very drunk" thing? REALLY BAD IDEA. Plenty of water? Yes. Some energy drinks? Ok. Lots of booze? You won't complete it. You'll probably become dehydrated, maybe even sick. If walking has become your "thing", you should know this.

One day? Doubtful. One day to complete the task and then probably spend at least half of day two just recovering (I would be booking treatments at the MGM spa ASAP!). My guess (and its purely a guess) is that you are walking at least 11 miles and it will probably take somewhere between 12 and 14 hours to complete the list (depending on how long you spend at each casino and how many additional food/rest breaks you take during the day). The only positive aspect to consider is that there's not really any elevation to speak of (other than up and down some stairs darting across the Strip multiple times). When I was young and in great hiking shape, that kind of distance on flat terrain was nothing. Now, older, disabled, and twenty pounds heavier, I can maybe walk almost ten miles in a day as long as I spread it across 14 hours (*coughDisneyWorldcough*). But I cannot even imagine doing it at any age while drinking!

Hopefully this list is just aspirational. Go at whatever pace you like, drink however much you want, and take as many breaks as you want. There's really no need to hit all 52 if you're moving at an enjoyable pace and having a good time

 

I’ve done the walk from Strat to Mandalay Bay in one day twice. It’s brutal. My advice is start at the Strat around sunup and get to TI while still in the shadows. From there it won’t be too bad, if, you’re willing to use the trams on that side of LVB. Don’t start at MB, you don’t want to be exposed, and out of the shade in afternoon heat, in those long stretches between TI and the Strat. I didn’t gamble in every casino nor was I drinking booze. However, at about every other property I’d get a liter of bottled water and ate very light food for breakfast and lunch. The following day I did the other side, from the Trop down to Sahara and then everything downtown later that night. Those walks had some functionality to them as I was still filling in some of the blanks in getting a $1, $5 & $25 chip from all the strip and downtown casinos. Would I do it again? No effing way. Could you visit all 50 in a day? Sure. But not by hoofing it all day whilst drinking and spending time gambling in each resort - even if it’s just one spin on a slot machine. Not trying to be Debbie Downer, just trying to give you a sense of what to expect. Either way, have a fun trip…
