Last trip was NYNY and I could not get a thing going. My usual suspects are VP early morning at the bar, bubble craps or electronic craps and slots. Three wheel $3 max bets and some Buffalo or whatever is popular. We went up to Mirage and thought I would try to get on their radar but same thing. Slots, gone in sixty seconds. Played some minimal FP at Park. Wife had a little success and me nothing to speak of. Usually I can get a little pot going and have fun but this trip I just could not get ahead and ended up not gambling for a couple days. Do you give up or do you chase the ace?
Used to be I'd hammer the ATM, but now I only gamble the cash I bring. If it doesn't go well early I usually just pack it in and sit in the sports book, play keno or slow play penny slots. It's still Vegas so it's better than any other place I might be.
Absolutely yes. A 72 hour ass kicking is all I can take. I usually am happy with a good discount offer on a room, so I don’t feel compelled to chase. My last Vegas trip had awful gambling, best anything was quad 10s, very sad, but I still had a great time, and waving the white flag was part of that. Turns out I’m not that passionate about gambling - I’m more into general buffoonery!
Ooooh yeah I have. In my younger days I headed to Reno and had beatdown after beatdown with no wins at all and left a day early. Those slots hated me.
This topic reminded me of this thread from a few months back: https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?threads/has-anyone-ever-left-vegas-early-intentionally%E2%80%A6.204121/
Yep… I’ll either shut it down or try and change my flight home if it’s a reasonable rate. I get tired of losing even though I go in fully expecting it. But if it’s just lose lose lose? Fuck that…
I guess I have too much Asian blood in me..no way could I justify tanking ~$1000 for a pair of one-way/same-day flights; when that $1000 could turn into $10,000 gambling.
Throw in the towel on a trip? Never. Throw in the towel or shorten a session? Sure. Gaming’s never my primary reason for the visit and I have no problem walking away if I’m burning hundy after hundy and then finding something else to do. I’ve said this before, “I hate the feeling of losing more than I like the feeling of winning.” That mindset controls my downside. It’s just how I’m wired… not suggesting it for anyone else.
Yeah pretty sure I did the last couple of days on one of my poker trips. Documented it on here as well, it wasn't pretty. I was actually up on gambling that trip as well, but just couldn't carry on.
This feeling has been researched, in fact, the economist who described it went on to win the Nobel Prize for his theory in 2002. Prospect theory stems from loss aversion where the observation is that agents asymmetrically feel losses greater than that of an equivalent gain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_theory
My usual sign that it’s time to take a break and go on a walk is when I realize I’m just aimlessly hitting the button like it’s my 9-5 and not even celebrating a small line hit
I had some extra gambling money allotted this for my trip this past December. Really only expected to have one gambling day of the three full days I was in town so I thought I'd be able to spend several hours in the casino having a good time. I blew through it all in no time and had no fun. It was just constant loss, maybe a single bonus that was such a minimal win it didn't even put a dent in the losses. I definitely threw in the towel after that. I always stick a couple of 20s in a machine at the airport if I have time and this trip I did better there than I did at the Cosmo. I still lost it all, I just got to play for about 15 minutes after a couple okay bonuses instead of losing 10 times that much in less than an hour.
Thanks for the comments. You made me feel better. I have had lots of losing trips but I always considered that the losing was on my terms. At The Bellagio in August I was up just over $800 of their money. I went for it with the slots and ended up leaving even. My wife thought I was crazy but it was their money and I was okay with trying to hit something bigger. December, I was not in control of anything and it was frustrating.
You and I were there at the same time as I recall from the December post. A few trips ago I think I won $50 bucks at a Simpsons game at the airport and it was one the more pleasant wins of the trip because as you said I got to play for awhile.
I think most of us have been there. If I lost all of my money by my last day and had fun, I’m fine with that, but if it happened within the first day or two, it would definitely put a sour taste in my mouth. My last trip I was up most of the trip then lost it all my last day or so. It was frustrating to be sure, but I was also there with my best friend so we just drank and walked around which was a nice reprieve. Long and short, you’re not alone.
