Just finished Gen V on the plane this weekend. Need to start something new. I am considering Snowfall on Hulu
We were looking for something light to watch this past weekend, after a stressful week. I suggested Encino Man with that hobbit guy, Brendan Fraser and Pauly Shore. I was worried that Pauly would be especially annoying, but I can say I was wrong. We haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a LONG time. We have only watched the first 4 episodes because my husband is allergic to binge watching. So far I haven't noticed too much other than nobody has a cell phone and need to use the pay phone at The Brick. I am annoyed by the old trope that people who hate each other are really in love (Joel/Maggie, see also Moonlighting), but that was annoying in the 90's too. If anyone talked to me the way Joel talks to Maggie, I would not make out with them because we shared a nice bottle of wine. Just saying. I had forgotten how much native culture is a part of the show. I like it, but I had forgotten how much there was, given the time period when we weren't as sensitive to other perspectives. I still love the show and can't wait to see Joel's metamorphosis into an Alaskan that I know is coming. And the fact that, after two attempts to watch this, my husband is actually enjoying it this time around.
Watched the Golden Globes last night to see what shows I should be watching. Started The Bear—lost me in the very beginning with all the montage footage—should I give it a another shot? Also started Beef—had started it before. Didn't like it any better. Anyway, I did like that Succession swept the Drama TV series category. I loved that show—dialogue was priceless. Oppenheimer obviously the big winner. Great movie. I think I'll watch The Holdovers one night this week on Netflix, been meaning to. I love Giamatti. And Killers of the Flower Moon will be free on Apple this Friday. Also might have to pony up $5.99 to watch Anatomy of a Fall. And I suppose I really should watch Barbie—Margot Robbie is one of my favorites after seeing Once Upon in Hollywood and Babylon.
I will give Northern Exposure another look at some point - add it to a long list of series I may never get around to lol
My 2024 treat is going to be a BritBox subscription (not sure yet what I'm dropping - Max, probably, since I just re-upped Disney with the $2 Hulu add-on). Is it better/cheaper to get britbox on its own, or through Amazon Prime? I'm having a hard time finding comparisons, or even pricing (from Amazon - I can find britbox on its site)
The Night Manager, based on a novel by John Le Carre. Amazon Prime is where it can be streamed. Definitely one of the better series that I’ve seen in recent years. Incredible acting and cinematography. Highly recommend. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Manager_(British_TV_series)
I liked The Bear. Finished it several weeks ago. Maybe give it another episode or two before you bail. Succession was outstanding. Loved every minute of it.
Olivia Colman was great in it too. I will watch anything with her in it. I recorded it on the TV when it first aired and just got around to watching it a few months ago.
Watched The Holdovers on Peacock. Good movie, not great. Giamatti is terrific, as is the supporting cast, but the plot is nothing spectacular. It does have a good message. The beginning reminded me of Dead Poet Society with the private boarding school, and wintry New England setting. Both chose a 60's-70's time frame as well. Giamatti's character, however, is the antithesis of the Robin Williams' character from DPS. Best line of the movie is: "We study history to understand the present." Probably worth the $5.99 the channel cost, especially if you also want to see the Chiefs-Dolphins playoff game this Saturday.
I took the recommendation of a few VMBers and started watching “Obliterated” today. My kinda show… set in Las Vegas, bombs, guns, action, hot cast, little thinking needed.
Not sure where to put this but… Spectrum users are now offered a free subscription to DisneyPlus. They didn’t give a timeline for how long it is free nor did they ask for a credit card number. They only asked for my birthday and my sex. I provided A birthday since they don’t need to know my real information. The sign up is on the DisneyPlus website which Spectrum users access via QR code. I switched one of my cable boxes for Roku so the QR code just popped up when I accessed the Spectrum app on Roku.
It's still on my list. Husband says he doesn't want to watch with me because it looks "stupid". Yeah, duh. And? It seems perfect for sitting on the couch with a favorite beverage or herbal remedy and just point at things and say "I've been there!" over and over. Maybe I can convince him tonight that he's been working so hard that maybe he wants to work on a personal project in his man cave tonight, because I'm such a good wife and care about his well being. Also, so I can put my brain on pause and watch a few episodes.
Okay, so I watched all of Obliterated over the weekend. First episode I was worried it was going to be too campy for me, but I went with it and was not disappointed. I was roaring with laughter (Hagerty's entrance at Plaza) and cheers in the last episode. It was not a deep intellectual series, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Vegas looked good and the story was compelling enough to keep watching more. I saw a lot more nakedness, sex, and big penises than expected, but I'm no prude. Also, poor Trunk. There is so much grab and go food in Vegas. I felt like I needed to send him a link to VMB so we could help him find some food!! So, for those who watched it... do you want a Season 2? I can't decide. I think it was a fun arc, but not sure I want to do it again. Oh who am I kidding? If Vegas looks pretty, I'll watch.
I fear the Vegas “connection” was a big part of what kept me involved and enjoying the show. If a Season 2 has the gang in say Milwaukee, I’m not sure my enthusiasm meter rises much.
Been looking forward to checking out Death and Other Details. First two episodes are out on Hulu today.
I was home sick last week and binge watched Young Sheldon. I enjoyed it much more than I expected. I love Annie Potts.
