    My Trip Report

    Planning:
I try to go to Vegas every summer and figured I would go after my birthday at the end of July. However, about a year ago I started teaching English to kids in China over (through? on?) the computer. The company that I teach for announced that they were having a conference in Las Vegas at the Rampart on 7/13. Well it doesn't take much to convince me to get to Vegas and this conference was $65 including breakfast and lunch. Done! I decided I would go Tuesday (7/9) to Tuesday (7/16). Checked my offers and had 5 free nights at Planet Hollywood which included a $100 dining voucher. I like to play downtown and had free offers for El Cortez, the D, and Golden Gate. However, I have never stayed at the Plaza and I played there a little in March so I thought I would like to check it out. I sent a host a note and he set me up with a room for my last 2 nights. I called up my best Vegas buddy who lives in California and she decided she wanted to meet me for a week of fun. I saw that the NBA summer league was happening when we were going to be there so I bought 2 tickets in the fancy section that included food and beer. I cashed in MyVegas rewards for 3 $25 MyKonami freeplay rewards, BOGO for Carrot Top, and BOGO beer at Tom's Urban in NYNY.

I decided I would drive to Vegas, from Tucson, since I would need a ride to Summerlin anyway and it would be nice to have my car in Vegas for a change. I always wanted to do a road trip where I stopped at comped casinos along the way so I decided since I was on my own I would do a compressed road trip. I decided to leave on Sunday and do 1 night at Ak-Chin and 1 night at Harrah's Laughlin. Below is the rest of the story .....

    Day 1 7/7/2019 - Tucson to Ak-Chin

I get up at 3am to teach every day so did that (I decided I am only teaching 2 classes while traveling, each at 6:30am). Then I had to pack. Here are some obligatory cat pictures (I hope these pictures work) for your enjoyment. First he looks so sad and then he is yelling at me! Badger 1.jpg Badger 2.jpg
My daughter lives in Phoenix and she had the night off (she is a nurse) so she decided to join me. She was in the parking lot when I arrived so she helped me schlep all of my bags to my room. Amazing how much more crap you pack when you don't have to worry about checking luggage. I had no money with me, my plan was to win on my free play and use that for my whole trip. Seems like a sensible plan doesn't it? :)
Well I didn't win on my free play, so I hit the ATM and took out $600. My bank will reimburse up to $15 for ATM charges. The fee here was about $4. Gambling did not go well.

We decided to hit up the diamond lounge. Where we had a couple of appetizers and some fancy sweet drinks. Diamond lounge.jpg

We took our frozen drinks outside and drank them by the pool. The pool was packed and there were hardly any seats available. We "enjoyed" the 106 degrees for maybe 30 minutes until we decided relaxing by the pool wasn't going to happen here. So we played some more Video Poker and had no good wins. My bankroll was disappearing fast and my daughter doesn't gamble much so we decided to go enjoy the tapas restaurant and call it an early night. This was great, we ordered 4 items (cheese plate, fries, charcuterie, and bruschetta), sorry I didn't get any pictures. I hardly had any cash left so we called it a night and watched a little TV in the room.

    Day 2 7/8/2019 - Ak-Chin to Harrah's Laughlin

I had to get up to teach a class at 6:30am and my daughter had a commitment to meet her BFF at their gym for a class. So we got up around 6am to get our day started. I decided to play some video poker. Guys ..... I was down to $40 left of the money I took out of the bank and then this happened: ak chin win 1.jpg

Took that cash and moved over to big girl video poker, where this happened: ak chin win 2.jpg

I don't play a lot of dollar video poker, just up my bet occasionally for a spin or 2. Awesome when this happens!

One more cool VP win ak chin win 3.jpg

I rolled out of there with $200 and headed to Laughlin. The drive was uneventful.

I valet parked and had the Bell desk take my abundance of bags. It took forever to check in and I was in the diamond check in room. Harrah's Laughlin was packed with families enjoying the water. I had a little bit of free play that I used on the first VP machine I saw. Hence the crappy pay table. Hit this: harrah's win 1 .jpg

    and this:
    harrah's win 2.jpg

Played for a bit and then decided to hit up the diamond lounge for dinner. They had some sandwich fixings, soup, fruit, chips and salsa. I was able to get a table outside and enjoy this view: Harrah's diamon lounge.jpg
After dinner I decided to go to the room and call it an early night. I asked the bar tender for 2 drinks to go, but he would only give me one. Finally had my bags delivered (they came fairly quick) and called it a night.

    Day 3 7/9/2019 - Off to Vegas!

Got up and taught my 6:30am class. Saw on VP Free that there is 1 9/6 quarter JoB machine in the non smoking area (woohoo!!). I found the machine and parked it there for a bit. I hit this: harrah's day 2 win 1.jpg
    and this:
    harrah's day 2 win 2.jpg
Had some breakfast in the cafe and lost a little money in a Kronos machine. I did hit a bonus, but it was pretty crappy so I have no record of it and I know I lost. I wanted to get to Vegas so I could get checked in at Planet Hollywood and play free play I had at Cosmo ($75) before I had to pick my friend up at the airport. I thought about hitting the ATM before I left Laughlin to avoid the ridiculous charges at Planet Hollywood (something like $14 now), but I forgot. Called for the bell desk and they said it would be 20 minutes before they could get my bags and they said they would have valet bring my car around. 40 minutes later they weren't there yet. Ugh. I called down and they said someone was on the way. He showed up immediately and I told him I would meet him at my car. I got downstairs and my car was there, but my bags were not. It was another 20 minutes before he showed up! I can't remember exactly, but I rolled out of Laughlin with somewhere between $100 and $200.

The beginning of the drive was awesome and I knew to make sure I went the speed limit in Searchlight. However, right when I got outside of Searchlight the traffic was completely stopped. I was about the 6th car back, but I couldn't tell what the issue was. I think I was stopped for a good 45 minutes and I started to panic about getting to Vegas in time to pick up my friend. Then I saw a helicopter land, an accident had happened up ahead and people needed to be airlifted out. Maybe the delay at Harrah's prevented me from being involved (or maybe I could have been in front of the mess, but I'll take the glass half full approach here).

I got to Planet Hollywood, checked in quickly, took a bag or two to my room, and went straight to Cosmo to play my free play. No great wins.

Picked up my friend at the airport and then made her go with me to Jerry's Nugget where we both joined the slot club and did their awesome new member promotion. We each ended up with $100 free play, $40 food credit, and some swag. Plus it was old people's day so we got another $10 each for food. I had arranged ahead of time for a friend of mine from Vegas to meet us there for dinner since I knew we would have trouble spending all of those food comps. We had 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, 1 dessert to share, and 3 desserts for us each to take 1 home. What I didn't realize is they wouldn't let us use the $40 and $10 comps together. I talked them in to it and they figured out how to make it work, but I don't think that would normally happen. I think I hit this on my free play: jerry's nugget.jpg
I broke even at Jerry's Nugget monetarily and ended up here if you count the dinner, desserts and swag (t-shirt, bag, deck of cards, and bottle of Jack Daniels to take home to my guy). I felt very safe at Jerry's Nugget, but it was now dark and I figured it was best for us to get back to the strip. Once again I forgot to go to the ATM while I was out and about.

Got to Planet Hollywood and played in the high limit room on the 100 play JoB machine. Just playing one hand at a time and had these hits: planet ho win 1.jpg
    planet ho win 2 .jpg

It would have been awesome to be playing more than 1 hand with a dealt 4 oak, but was nursing my bankroll and trying to get my goal of 500 points. Hit the points and called it a night.

Day 3 7/10/2019 - First full day in Vegas!

I don't get to laze about much in the morning so that is exactly what I did on this day. My friend went and got us coffee from Starbucks and we enjoyed our leftover desserts from Jerry's Nugget. I decided I wanted to hit up a Young at Heart promotion so eventually we headed over to the Gold Coast. I used my ACG and LVA coupons here for some free play and match plays. I'm pretty sure I got a blackjack on my first match play. We each got a free breakfast or lunch buffet and we headed over right when it closed! The coupons were also good for $5 at their food establishments so we each got a personal veggie pizza from subway. Hung around for the drawing and we didn't win. I forgot to hit the ATM again, WTF is wrong with me?!

Went back to Planet Hollywood and left the car at Valet. We decided that we wanted to go see Carrot Top on Saturday night. I have really never had any interest in seeing Carrot Top, but I kept hearing great things about his show. I had a MyVegas BOGO, but my friend who lives in Vegas wanted to join us too so I was trying to figure out how to get the best deal for 3 tickets. With the BOGO you also had to pay a $15 service charge and the seats were in the last row. We decided to walk down to the Luxor and use the 25% off coupon from LVA. On the way I stopped at one of the "half price" ticket places and saw that they had Carrot Top tickets, but they were more expensive than the prices listed on the Luxor website! Caveat emptor! I also wanted to stop at Excalibur, NYNY and Aria to get the $25 MyKonami free play I had from each casino. I ended up getting 3 great seats in the 4th row for a total of $184. I also made reservations for Charlie Palmer's for before the show. I have wanted to go there and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try the cut of the week. My birthday is at the end of July so I wanted to know about the birthday giveaway at these casinos too, plus every reservation I made I said it was my birthday (don't judge it is at least right month, I wouldn't do it any other time!). Birthday free play - At Luxor the line was too long for me to ask, Excalibur told me within 7 days before or after your birthday, Park MGM gave me $25 fsp, and NYNY told me they only do something by invite and gave me some green beads that say "Happy Birthday!" on them.

After all the free play was collected, I sat at row 720 in Aria and played it through. I have no picture so I assume nothing great happened and that I just turned the fsp in to cash and hit the road.

I then Headed to Cosmo. I have reservation to eat at é by José Andrés when I got back in a few days. This dinner is expensive and you have to pay in advance. I went up there to get them add the credit to my players for the $700 I've already spent (I still haven't decided about the wine pairing). This was quite the process, the manager of the restaurant had to e-mail the manager at the Identity desk to get the points added. They did and it all worked out.

I then went to play my favorite Ultimate X machine. I mostly play this game in nickels because it can be a big old money suck. However, when the wins hit they are so much fun. We weren't playing for very long when this happened:

    dealt royal ultimate .jpg
    handpay .jpg

This happened to fast! it was dealt, the machine froze, and up popped the hand pay message in what felt like a nano second. I uttered the only appropriate response "Holy Shit!" This is the 3rd time I have hit a royal on Ultimate X and every one has been with a multiplier and a hand pay. The first time was on this very machine with a 10x multiplier for $2K, the second one was at Ak-Chin in March on a dime machine with a 4x multiplier for $1600. I love this game. Spoiler alert - I never thought about an ATM again after this!

Drank dinner in the diamond lounge at Planet Hollywood, met some basketball players who we would see play the next day, and finished up with my goal of getting 500 points. Had this hit in the PH high limit room, guess I was feeling flush (straight flush?) :) since Planet ho straight flush.jpg I moved up to 3 hands! I'm such a risky gambler! Called it a night a winner. Woohoo!

    Day 4 7/11/2019 - Basketball!

I bought Summer League tickets the day they went on sale and truthfully I got screwed a little bit. There was no schedule at that time, I assume since it was before the draft, so I tried to pick the day that would work best with what I had planned. I assumed I would be able to see most teams play since would be games all day in 2 stadiums. However when the schedule came out games started at 3pm for the day I bought tickets instead of noon like every previous day. I decided to make the best of it and made some plans for the morning.

I had a $50 gift card for Ellis Island that I won in a raffle in March, plus I hadn't used my ACG and LVA coupons there yet this year. We got the car and headed over for a delicious breakfast. I had the chicken and waffles and they were awesome - Ellis Island breakfast.jpg

Won my match play, played my fsp through the machine, picked up my free T-shirt and snack (because it was old people's day here) and hit the road. We then went to Downtown Grand because they were doing a giveaway of junk no one needs when you earn points. In the past I have gotten some great stuff here: booze, a jacket, sunglasses for earning 500 points while playing and I have had good luck with video poker at DTG. Not this time.

My favorite machine was gone or moved. I found another one and played on it, but I couldn't hit anything. I also had no free play on my card which was kind of a bummer, usually there is a little something. I move machines and still couldn't hit anything and neither could my friend. I had enough, I decided go see about the giveaway to see if I had earned enough for whatever the crap was they had. Well they changed the promotion and it was just overpriced junk you could use your banked points to purchase. I guess they have really tightened things up to pay for the expansion, but I'm out. I'm taking DTG off my list for a bit!

Took the car back to Planet Hollywood and called for a Lyft to take us to UNLV for the Summer League tournament. We decided to get the $200 tickets that had special seating in Thomas and Mack, plus came with food and beer. I figured I could lose $200 super fast gambling, so this was a bargain! This was Cox Pavilion for the Clippers and Kings game - I don't know why it is here twice, sorry.
cox pavilion .jpg We got there pretty early so the arena was pretty empty. Here is the view from our seats:
    basketball view.jpg
I'm an Arizona alum and fan so it was exciting to see some players. Here is Rawle Alkins Rawle.jpg

The food was okay. We had sliders, chicken strips, french fries, salad, nuts and some dessert. There was bud, bud light, some limited edition bud and some awful hard seltzer stuff. Plus soda and water.

We went in to the Cox Pavilion for the Clippers vs Kings game:
    cox pavilion .jpg

After this game we took a car back to PH and played a little at Cosmo and at PH. We had fun drinking and we pooled our money to play some slots. I know we won a $500 lightening link jackpot, but I don't have a picture. Because drinking. I do have these pictures from this night:
    Cosmo

Called it a night and went to bed a winner for the second night in a row!

    Day 5 7/12/2019 - Rampart

I lounged around a bit this morning. I had told someone I would pick her up at the airport and take her to the Rampart. Our conference was was there the next day and I wanted to check it out. Once she got checked in the 3 of us used my coupons for the buffet. It was something like $12.50 for all 3 of us. That was too expensive, the buffet was gross. The hot food was cold and the food was tasteless. Don't waste your time.

We joined the slot club and I used my free play coupon. The lady I picked up from the airport got a coupon for $10 free play with her stay. So I showed her how to join the slot club and then I taught her how to play video poker. She played on that $10 for ages and when she went home on Sunday I think she was up $150 for her trip. I did not have such luck, I was losing and losing. So I decided to lower my bet and on my first deal on dimes DDB this happened: rampart.jpg

Whew that was a nice recovery. Went back to Planet Hollywood where we drank dinner in the Diamond Lounge and called it a night.

Day 6 7/13/2019 - Conference Day, Charlie Palmer, Carrot Top charlie palmer birthday.jpg

The conference was from 9am to 5:30pm. An attendee was staying at Bally's so I gave her a ride. I worked for a Fortune 500 company for many years and the conferences I went to were never this much fun. Here is the stage at the end of the conference:
    conference.jpg

These participants went all out! I just enjoyed the breakout sessions and learned some things.

I told the girl I gave a ride to that I could get her back to The Four Seasons, but that she would need to take a car from there since I had dinner reservations for 6:15pm at Charlie Palmer. She said no problem. The lady I picked up at the airport wanted to go to a meet and greet and PH so I also told her I could get her to The Four Seasons. When I was waiting for my car from valet someone asked if we were getting an Uber to the strip because she was staying at the Mirage. So I gave her the last seat in my car and we were off. The 4 Seasons Valet was awesome and ride share was right there, so it worked out perfectly for my passengers.

I had been feeling like I was getting sick so I asked my friend to pick me up some airborne or coldeeze and bring it to our dinner. She did and I actually never got sick, but I was worried!

My 2 friends met me at Charlie Palmer and we had the cut of the week. It was awesome. I think we had petite sirloins, but I can't remember. the sides were mushrooms and yummy mashed potatoes. I know the dessert was outstanding and the unlimited wine pairing can't be beat. My birthday tour started here, they brought out another dessert and we did manage to get a picture of that one (which I again posted twice, sorry again!): charlie palmer birthday.jpg

We then walked over to the Luxor for Carrot Top. His show was great. He had a bottle of Crown Royal that he shared with the audience. He gave me a shot for my birthday (my friends did that, not me this time). We really laughed a lot at this show.

Got my car from valet and headed back to Planet Hollywood. This is only the second time I have had my car in Vegas. I really wanted to drive down the strip with the top down on my convertible and this was my chance to do it. We tried to get some selfies, but they were all pretty crappy. I guess this is the best one:
    convertible.jpg

Meh, it was fun anyway. Went back to Planet Hollywood and called it a night without gambling one bit.

Day 7 7/14/2019 - Giada, Planet Hollywood, Plaza, The D, Golden Gate

We had a great view at Planet Hollywood
    planet ho view.jpg
The $100 dining credit that came with my comp room could only be used Sunday through Thursday. We have both really wanted to try Giada so the brunch tasting menu seemed like the perfect way to use the comp.

At this point I still thought I was getting sick so I also had a green juice with ginger that is on her menu.

    Here is our food:
This course was the best, everything was so awesome
    giada 1.jpg

I won round 2. I had the pasta and my friend had the salmon cake benedict (she didn't love it)
    giada 2.jpg

    She won round 3
I don't like eggs and I guess I didn't realize the lemon dessert was a custard.
    giada 3.jpg

    giada 4.jpg
At one point the waiter walked by with 2 bottles of prosecco for another table. I jokingly said something like "I was hoping you were bringing that to us". He brought us each a glass and said it was for my birthday. That is quite the classy touch that I wasn't expecting.

Checked out of Planet Hollywood with no charges and headed over to The Plaza. What a difference. They wouldn't let me check in yet and said my room wasn't ready. We left our bags with the bell desk. We played for a couple of hours and had no wins to speak of during this time. I do a lot of my planning for trips and I feel like we have been running every day so I thought it might be nice to get a cabana at the pool for our last full day and just relax. I went to check it out and was told it would be $150 for Monday with $100 food and beverage credit. Done!

After we checked in we headed over to the D when I used the coupon from LVA to earn free play. We played at the VUE bar for a very long time, but I really had a hard time hitting any 4 OAKS anywhere downtown. The straight flush was worth over $300, but we couldn't hit it. I had a $40 food credit and my friend had a $25 credit so we decided to go to the bar at Andiamo's for appetizers. Wow, they were delicious. I forgot about taking pictures. We had a caprese salad, meatball, and shrimp cocktail. I know there was something else, but can't remember. I've never eaten here before, but I'm pretty sure I will go back.

Played a bit more, got my free play, used it in a Kronos machine where I had a pretty good bonus. No pictures though and can't remember amount. I thought I would do a live trip report and it didn't happen so I think I started to forget about pictures.

Played some VP at Golden Gate where I think I did a bit better. After that we headed back to The Plaza and called it a night.

Day 8 7/15/2019 - Pool, Bingo, MSS. Last full day!

I think we played a little and had coffee before we headed to our cabana. We could check in there at 10am. Got there and got settled in for the day. My friend was hungry so she ordered a BLT wrap since it was the closest thing they had to a breakfast item and we ordered 2 bloody Mary's. We also asked for the fruit plate that came with the cabana. When our server brought us the bloody Mary's she told us that there was an issue with the food truck where they make food for the pool. They did manage to make the wrap and cut the fruit, but they didn't open the food truck because the AC was busted. No way they could be in there and cook. We were told that we didn't have to use our food credit and would just be charged for our orders and $50 for the cabana. We had already ordered the wrap and 5 drinks. We stayed a bit longer, but then we decided we had enough relaxation and there was gambling to be done.

We went back to the room to get cleaned up and we had no hot water for showers! Also, when I went to use the blow dryer sparks SPARKS! flew out of it. The beds were pretty uncomfortable too. I'm not really much of a complainer and this was my first time staying at the Plaza, pretty sure it will also be my last. I like the rooms at El Cortez better, plus they have refrigerators and coffee machines. I wasn't happy with the pay table changes at the bars in EC, but I think I will go back there again next time. I haven't stayed at the D though and I do have comps from there, so maybe I need to give them a chance.

We each got a $25 bingo match play from the machine in the Plaza on Sunday. So we decided to go give bingo a try. The packages we bought ended up costing $41 or $42 and came with 2 drinks. Guys... we each won 3 bingos! None of them were very large, but the wins covered the cost to play and gave us a little extra cash.

We then decided to go hit Nacho Daddy for Happy Hour. We had some delicious nachos and margaritas. Then we stumbled over the D and played the VUE bar for a bit and then also played at the GG. I never hit one 4 OAK! WTF?! I was annoyed and pissy. My poor friend did great putting up with me though. We went back to the plaza and on Mondays when you earn 100 points you get a free piece of pizza. We were both full, but I didn't want those coupons to do go to waste. We each got a piece of pizza and walked over to MSS. On the walk we each found a homeless person to give the pizza to. The lady I gave mine to seemed very confused, but the lady my friend gave her piece to was extremely happy. We went to Boar's Head Bar and there were 2 open games, but the one I tried to use wouldn't take my money. So I decided to find an Ultimate X machine. This happened:
    mss.jpg

This actually happened twice, but I only took one picture. Then we headed over to the Cal for some ice cream. I tried to use points, but the computer kept freezing. I think they tried 3 times and the line was getting long with people waiting. She went to try for a 4th time and I just told her I would pay cash. Had the ice cream, played a little at the Cal and then went back to The Plaza and ended the night. I wanted to make sure I got a good rest before my long drive.

Day 9 7/16/2019 - Home. Planning for next trip.

We had crappy cheap breakfasts in the cafe at the Plaza. Played a little with no great wins. I did hit 30 something free spins on a Harley Davidson machine. In the middle of this happening a man asked me for money for a "bus ticket". I gave it to him, I hope it helped for whatever he needed it for.

My friend signed up for the free shuttle to the airport from The Plaza that left about noon. I decided to hit the road about 11am. I had a 7 hour drive ahead of me and had to get up at 3am again the next day. I made it home with no issues and I had $500 in my wallet. That's pretty awesome considering I was down to $40 early on this trip.

I'm headed back with my guy in just a few days. I can only get him to go with me every few years because he doesn't do Vegas like I do. I love planning the trips (in case you can't tell) and I haven't done much for our trip yet because I wanted to get this report posted. I hope you don't mind the length here, I just wanted to give back because I have read every single trip report that has been posted since my March trip.

We are actually spending 1 night at Ak-Chin, 2 nights in Vegas - Planet Hollywood, 3 nights in Lake Tahoe (Harrah's), and then 2 or 3 nights in Vegas (Ceaser's Palace) on our way back. Right now we have free diamond tickets for Penn and Teller, reservations at e (my guy is a big foodie and he is the most excited by this), and reservations at Hell's Kitchen. I bought a groupon for the Atomic Missile Museum and one for a self guided scavenger hunt in Lake Tahoe. I would like to take him to the Clark County Museum, Neon Boneyard, pinball museum, Lotus of Siam and so much more. I don't know how much I can fit in and still gamble! I made myself write this trip report before I finished planning my next trip. Off to plan the next adventure!

I forgot to add that on my last day 7/16 (13 days before my birthday) when I swiped my card at the Plaza the machine said I had $20 free play for my birthday. Another birthday freebie that might be available for you!
