To most people, gambling is something you do in a proper "casino". Like, a dedicated building or part of a building that has an immersive gaming experience of tables and machines, as well as food and beverage options to keep you happy while placing your bets.

As we know, gaming in Vegas isn't just something you'll find in "casino" settings like the resorts on the strip. You'll see gaming in bars, gas stations, and even convenience stores. Seems random by the standards of the rest of the world... but hey, it's Vegas, and anything goes.

Having said that, what is the most random setting you've ever seen for gambling in or around Vegas? Perhaps that could be a car wash? A laundromat? A shopping mall?

I was going to say grocery store too.

Laundromat could be dangerous for me. After all, I'm a captive audience and I'd have all those quarters. I wonder how many times I'd bring home wet clothes because I risked the dryer money. :)

Ages ago, before I was 21, I stopped for gas in Vegas, on my way through. I saw some "old guy" (probably younger than I am now, yikes!) playing slots at the gas station and thought, "This town is weird." :haha:

Those clothes will dry themselves... but that jackpot won’t win itself!

I never have time in Las Vegas to go to church, any church, but I always mean to check one or several out to see if they have slots.

This one always cracks me up!

This is in a very downscale bar in the almost-ghost-town of Goodsprings, just southwest of Las Vegas.

For those who don't believe this, or don't know how the game is played, the numbers called out for Bingo are determined by where a chicken goes doo-doo on a numbered board. I assume the Gaming Commission approves. :)

Like Sonya, it was years ago.....more specifically, around 1981-1982....i would have been 8 or 9 years old and my parents drove to vegas every year with us 3 kids (a 3 LONG day drive one way), and I remember there was a Kmart not far from Fremont street that we would go to every time for the supplies for the motel room ( we would stay at the Algiers motel, which was across from Circus Circus, when we didn't stay at the Circus Circus). Anyway I was so amazed that there was slot machines in the entry way foyer going in to Kmart.....just sitting there for anyone to play.....it seemed no one was around to watch them or make sure you were 21 to play.......but while I'm reminiscing, i can remember that each of us kids got $20 a day to play in the midway at Circus Circus. Games cost a quarter at that time, and that $20 would last us several hours. As an adult, I make a visit to circus circus once per trip to vegas ( we go about twice a year) and each time I drop $100 in less than an hour playing the same damn games that was there 35-40 years ago. The chicken game where you use the hammer to put the chicken in the pot is by far my favorite to this day. Then of course the water balloon games, and then the camel games where you roll the ball into the yellow, blue or red hole. Oops, i got off topic going down memory lane lol.

When Iowa had the VLTs in 2005 or whatever...they were everywhere, and it was the most depressing thing I've ever seen.

I didn't start going to Vegas until 2008, but took my first solo trip in 2010. Stopped at a gas station/convenience store to get drinks for the room, and couldn't believe they had slot machines right there in the store!!!

The first time I went to the Peppermill I was surprised and didn't expect to see machines there.

I was at an actual Hooters in Vegas about fifteen years ago and they had about five bar top machines with engraved placards detailing what they would comp, basically two draft beers. Once when I had a rental I stopped at The Slanted Clam seafood restaurant on Sahara, I think. I knew they were going to have a t-shirt for sale and found a video poker bar in the middle of the restaurant. I hit a 4OAK and got the t-shirt as a prize! And the coin payout as well.

For some reason the ones at the pharmacy always seem a little out of place, especially the ones with enclosed smoking gaming rooms

I have got to see this for myself. Do you recall which pharmacy this is?

I think it was near Frankies Tiki, I thought it was a chain, maybe a cvs? Sadly I made the mistake of having had a second Tiki drink so I really can't be too sure

While my upcoming trip's agenda is pretty booked up, I am thinking of going to Frankie's, so I'll check for it if I go. Google Maps indicates there's a CVS just a bit west of there.

Now, related... I put my "research" cap on and came to be amazed at how common "retail" gaming is (or was) in Vegas! Check out some of these photos...

It seems that many of these places don't exist anymore. But they make for a sight that is in many ways just astounding, despite the dark realities of the demand for these gaming devices.

Oooh! I did find one that exists though. It seems that at Vons (45 E Horizon Ridge Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89002), this video poker area of theirs is alive and well. I just called in to verify, and they say it's open from 7:00 am to 10:30 pm each day.

The day on my upcoming trip in which I'll be doing a run up and down the Boulder Highway is planned right down to the minute... but hell or high water I will get my ass over here to play one of these machines.

For a long time the Blueberry Hill on east Flamingo had VP machines in the waiting area. They have been gone for a couple of years now.

One thing I do remember from my second (I think) trip to LV, not an unusual location per se but an unusual location within the casino, was that one of the buffets (Sands? DI? It was an easy walk from the Tam O Shanter) had machines along the queue for the buffet line and people (including me) played them while waiting. I haven't seen that for decades.
