If someone I cared about, yes that includes VMB members, said they just had to go to Las Vegas right now my suggestion to them would be avoid downtown and avoid the strip and instead find a resort/casino away from the insanity such as Southpoint, Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock and stick to just that location.

Whats currently going on in LV is more than, "its always been there its just not being diluted by conventions and retirees right now" . Its troubling what is going on.

I'm going in November, subject to change of course as I've already changed my plans three times this year. To that point, however, a lot of the kids causing problems are likely to be less prevalent when it becomes Winter as the pools aren't open and there's not much to do save for gamble, and at limits, at least ostensibly, a lot of the younger generation can afford.

I'm not old, I'm 33, but I have no desire to be around 21 year old kids (or any kids/young 20 somethings for that matter lol).

To your point, yes, things clearly aren't ideal there, but being fatalistic isn't going to stop most people from going. I'm sure you mean well, but the lion's share of people are going to do whatever they want irrespective of you telling people not to go.

How long until we see metal detectors to enter strip resorts?
Not cancelling my November trip yet, but likely now switching properties.

the reddit "tales from the front desk" forum is full of stories right now from all over the USA about mid tier and above properties having major behavioral issues while those that work at properties that have always had issues report little has changed for them or it has even dropped off a little

threads where people are saying they have never had to call the cops in years and they have done so multiple times now sometimes for serious issues

having read that forum for a long time now those that work at lower end properties have always told the stories of how many of their trouble makers had to tone it down because their property was their last chance and if they got banned from there that was it

now that some of those that cause issues have the ability to "spread their wings" for at or near they same cost they are also availing themselves of the opportunity to push things to the limit and to try and take advantage of everything they can and they don't care about causing issues at a place where they know they are not going to be a long term customer...and many of those places were ill prepared or simply did not know what was coming their way or that they needed to get on top of it immediately or how to get on top of it....the low end places rely on "if you are unwelcome here then you go nowhere" while better places relied on price....well when the price drops enough people take their shot

Just because Vegas was relatively safe before, or seemed safe, on that note—-let’s not forget some massively tragic things have gone down there just like they have in every corner of this country—-doesn’t mean you can expect the same now. Do you expect the same experience at the grocery store that you had 11 months ago? I don’t. Everywhere you go people are on edge, things are just different, times are hard for A LOT of people, and if that isn’t you, congratulations, but don’t be shocked if you run into someone with a chip on their shoulder in Sin MF City. Some people in this country aren’t even “safe” going to work every day and yet we are expecting this island-of-anything-goes in the desert to be exempt. If anything the fact that the place is still as safe as it is, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the dedication of security and LEOs. Ask yourself what type of vacation you want, then do the math on what is ACTUALLY happening where you want to go and see if you can’t do some subtracting to find a better answer. It’s fine if you remember things being one way...but be aware that it may not be that way now. You wanna go camping in Cali? Is it the same as what you planned? Can you plan something else?

none of this shit seems overtly threatening. I personally wouldn’t hang out around Fremont after dark but beyond that...? Vegas seems like a place you need to turn in earlier than normal right now. Maybe you can’t pop off and run your mouth if someone makes you mad. Welcome to most cities. Money won’t buy you an out or an avoidance on that now.

There is nobody to blame there are only circumstances. You are a part of the circumstances if you choose to be there. There’s really not anything else to it.

I think that at least some of this is true. There are more cameras and social media gives anyone a platform. And casinos have always had a level of protection by the media in Nevada, now maybe more so as Adelson essentially owns both the print papers in town.

I think I've been clear that I'm in the camp that doesn't think people should be going to Vegas in the pandemic. Everything we know about this virus is that it thrives when people are indoors, in close contact, over time. I don't know what is a better example of that than casinos, especially with the alcohol and lowered inhibitions that happens in Vegas. But I also recognize that's not my decision to make for anyone but myself. All I can do is try to provide the information I collect about the virus and conditions in Las Vegas and let people make their own decisions about whether the risks outweigh the rewards. I pass no judgement on people who decide to stay home, visit their local, travel somewhere else to go to casinos or not, or go to Vegas.

Now one of those risks seems to be from more than just the virus. They are statistically small risks, but you should be aware that weekends are crazier than weekdays. Nights more than days. Some properties more than others. Etc.

I've had a pretty steady diet of Las Vegas news for the last couple of decades. Crime has always been a problem, as it is in any major city. Most of it is kept off The Strip and out of the Casinos, so it's always surprising to see it, but it's not unheard of in the past. Remember the people who were stabbed in their room at Circus Circus? That was before the pandemic, but not that long ago. The October1 Shooting? Not too long ago. And fights and stabbings and even random shootings happen. It's an open carry state and you never know who you are mouthing off to. I know I've seen my share of fights. Even ended up way too close to one at Binion's many years ago. Drunken jerks, gotta drunken jerk I guess. It's just another risk assessment everyone has to do before planning their trips. Chances are, you won't be involved in something, but there is a chance. Just like with the virus. Be informed, take precautions, plan accordingly.

I'm still traveling, because i need it for my sanity. But we are choosing condos and cabins over hotels where you are more likely to interact with other people. We are choosing outdoor activities or solo activities over being around other people. I don't have plans to visit a casino in the foreseeable future, but if I did, it would be for a short period of time in the casino as part of a larger trip somewhere that isn't Vegas. And I'm surprised that I don't really feel the urge right now. I did earlier this year though.

We have three more trips on the calendar for this year and none of them involve a casino. I never thought that would happen again, after my several year Vegas drought in the mid 2000's, after Dan announced he didn't want to go with me anymore and I was afraid to go solo. Now, I don't like it when he comes with me. :) But this will definitely be the longest stretch without a Vegas trip for me since the late 00's. Seems weird, but you gotta do what works for you.

I have been thinking about if the low room rates would really be a contributing factor to the current Vegas "clientele". I mean, most are probably still paying resort fees.

Then I thought about what I saw checking-in and other times going by check-in: groups of 4-6 people checking into one room. Quite a few of them. Large families(2-4 adults, 3-4 kids)checking into one room. You start splitting that cheap room rate plus resort fee 4-6 ways, and I'm sure room rates play a part. And of course, free parking for the first time in years. And one of the few places where so much is open 24-7.

DisneyWorld in Orlando has been open. And we're not hearing the horror stories happening there. But they aren't offering a $25 admission or a $50 family pass "welcome back" special. And no free parking.

Super cheap rates, free parking, weed stores, 24/7 booze, 24/7 open action...normally Vegas has all those things...except super cheap rates and free parking.

Most of us here realize Vegas rooms are often a good value compared to other cities. But to others, $69 a night with a $40 resort fee per night and $15 a day parking isn't going to work. But $24 a night even with a resort fee and free parking, get a few friends to come with and split it, and let's get crazy!

Or the shooting inside Ballys a few years ago? I mention that because Ballys has always seemed to be a relatively sedate resort with an older crowd. But random, horrible violence still happens (NYNY shooting, the terrorist plot also planned at NYNY, the bus shooting outside Cosmo a few years ago, the Bellagio lobby robbery the same weekend, etc. etc. etc.). For me, in terms of violence, vegas seems just as risky as it always has. I struggle to think of a single trip where I didn't observe violence or witnessed a situation that seemed like it may quickly turn violent. Out of all those times, only once was I involved in the violence and it was incredibly minor (and involved a drunk middle aged lady who didn't like how I bet at the tables, not a scooter riding youth!).

Maybe the heightened concern, tension, or whatever word you want to use is a result of increased mainstream media coverage of these incidents. I have always gathered most of my Vegas news from places other than the major newspapers, so I feel like I have always read or heard a steady stream of incidents, similar to what I expect from any major urban city. I agree, everyone should make their own decision whether to visit in light of these incidents (one or two of which, I acknowledge, seem different than any past incidents I can recall), but I am not convinced there is any actual statistical proof of increased violence right now as compared to years past. As many on here have said in different ways over the years, just be smart and avoid dangerous situations.

Per Sonya: We're traveling. We take our clubs, our bikes, our hiking shoes. It's needed. No hurry to get back to Vegas.

I dunno, it all just looks to me like:

Virus demo skews younger and cheaper. It's affordable to go away for the weekend and get the hell out of the house or whatever.

Now split off that portion. They're not gamblers, so
    • Nothing to do but drink and drink and drink and walk around
    • Small percentage walking around ready for action
    • A buncha the rest walking around because maybe there'll be some action to see

Don't get me wrong, I haven't observed giant brawls or incidents of that ilk. The biggest incident I have seen was a guy trying to flip over tables at Aria before fighting with and being tackled by security. The incident I was involved with personally involved someone throwing a glass at me. Usually its small stuff or arguments that look like they will spill over into violence before people are separated or cooler heads prevail.

This is true in so many ways....

Now if you were to dilute these groups with higher hotel costs and more tourists. The amount of violence decreases tremendously.

That’s why I personally am not concerned about the current violence. I’m not there anyways...

@UKFanatic someone threw a glass at you in a casino? Please, do tell on that one! I'm assuming it was a Louisville fan lol

That would have made for a better story!

Nothing really exciting. It was several years ago at Aria. It was back when I mostly played craps. I was betting my usual dark side most of the time. There were two conventioneers standing to my right, at the end of the table. They were both middle aged women. After about an hour of play, they were well down and I was up. One of the women decided that was the right time to start bitching about my playing the don't pass, even though I had been doing it for most of the past hour. As usual, I just stood there and took it. Not the first time a superstitious craps player decided to talk shit at me because they were losing. Anywho, it was her turn to shoot. My don't pass bet was already out. She bet the line, and promptly PSO. She starts talking shit again about how I was betting against her and that somehow magically made it a bad roll. Finally, I said something back because I was sick of her. I told her I was betting against the house, same as her, just with a different bet. The dice came to me next and I told her I would get on the pass line with her so we would be on the same team (which I almost always do when shooting anyway). As soon as I put my bet down, she bet the don't. I gave her a thumbs up and sincerely told her that's a good bet. A few rolls later, I hit the number. I guess that was her breaking point. She was busted, threw her glass at me, and started hauling ass toward the lobby before it even hit me. She got me in the chest, ice and whatever she was drinking all over me (but not the table). I just stared at the crew in disblief and they sort of shrugged. The lady's friend seemed terrified, as though she had done something wrong herself. She colored up and left. The supervisor handed me a towel. I cleaned up a little and kept playing. No idea if security ever did anything

That's awful, she should have been arrested for battery. It's one thing to run one's mouth, but that's never acceptable.

You handled it better than me. I had a friend one time who was being hassled at PH (of all places as most folks are normally having a good time there, until they lose I suppose lol) and, whilst at the blackjack table for apparently playing "wrong" when he would stay on hard 12-20 against dealer bust cards (3-6) which, not ironically, is the right move. Well, this guy at 1st base threw his cards at my friend and one nicked his eye. My friend got angry and said something in effect to "what the hell was that about" and, of course, the belligerent man said something tantamount to "what are you going to do about it". I'm at 3rd base witnessing this entire incident, but at this point I stand up and walk over to a few inches from his face and say "I'll do something about it you don't apologize'". I had on an old shirt on from the OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) days and, while I'm a very friendly person (at least I think so), I've been told I look like someone not to cause an issue with. Needless to say, the man apologized and left immediately.

Not to ever suggest confrontation is acceptable, but I've found some folks need to be checked, otherwise they'll continue to treat others terribly. In this case, Greg from New York understood he was one more word from his collarbone being broken into 11 pieces so I'm of the opinion he learned his lesson.
